Branching Out

Where it began

After teaching for over three decades, Monique observed a concerning decline in people’s mental health (anxiety, stress, giving up, depression, hopelessness and loneliness, to name a few). To address this, she applied her knowledge of applied neuroscience to create a Neuroeducation Buoyancy Program (NBP). The strategies within the program aimed to promote understanding, empower, and equip the learners and provide hope for their future.

How it's helping

Throughout the 10-week Action Research process, the NBP not only worked towards its goals in empowering students but also gave rise to two essential components: the Analogical Buoyancy Model (ABM) (details below) and a shared buoyancy language among participants. These elements proved instrumental in helping students express, understand and overcome their everyday difficulties, challenges and setbacks.

Research Results to Date

  • After the delivery of the NBP, results revealed the following.
    • Improvements in students’ awareness of their brain’s functionality
    • The ability to use strategies that circumvent anxiety, negative thinking and stress.
    • Improved communication in relationships,
    • Improved sleep patterns,
    • Improved buoyancy.

Research Results Up To Date

After the delivery of the NBP, resutos revealed the following.

  • improvement in students’ awareness of their brain’s functionality
  • improved skills and the ability to use strategies that circumvent anxiety, negative thinking and fear of new assessments, and
  • promoted quality relationships, sleep, and, most importantly, buoyancy.

About The Author

Dr Monique White is an Educator, Senior Learning Designer, and HEA Fellow with three decades of education experience in secondary and tertiary institutions. After seeing first-hand the decline in mental health, she created a program with the brain in mind to assist people in improving their buoyancy/ everyday resilience to bounce back from life’s setbacks.

Monique’s PhD in Applied Neuroscience used Action Research to evaluate the Neuroeducation Buoyancy Program (NBP) that she developed. Whilst completing her doctorate, Monique also developed various online Educational Neuroscience programs that have been completed by nearly 50,000 individuals worldwide. Monique’s passion for helping others extends beyond her career in education, as she is deeply committed to making a positive difference in the world. As a result, in her free time, she also volunteers in social development work in at-risk regions.
